There’ll Be Dancing, Dancing, and Maybe a Revolution

Posted by on February 10, 2010 at 12:54 pm

DDR

C-c-c-combo breaker!

Dance Dance Revolution was initially released in 1998 and has since basically been replaced first by Guitar Hero and eventually by Rock Band because, apparently, we Americans would much rather sit down and play pretend guitar than actually move our legs to double-time J-pop. However, the fact is that the fusion of endorphins and the Tetris effect of objects moving across a screen is still an intoxicating combo. And fortunately for those of us (read: people like me) who are pining for the days when we nerdily* spent hour stomping on arrows, we recently received this email:

Dance Dance Revolution Club Club

“Those who were seen dance-dancing were thought to be insane by those who
could not hear the music.” – Fictional Friedrich Nietzsche

Harvard University’s brand new DDR club meets for the first time this
Friday, and you’re invited–join us as we take part in the Japanese video
game sensation that has swept the world! All skill levels are welcome,
whether you’re a dancing master or can’t tell your up arrow from your down
arrow.

Friday, February 12th
7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Sever 110

Tell all your friends, and email Avalon Owens at
aowens@college.harvard.edu with any questions.

Yeah, we’re pumped.

*And believe me, I mean “nerdily” as an awesome compliment.

Harvard Begins Ivy Play With Impressive Win

Posted by on January 19, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Wright

Wright goes up over two Big Green Defenders for the score

While you were at home catching up on sleep and watching TV, the basketball team was back at school, kicking off Ivy League basketball by defeating Dartmouth in a blowout, 76-47. The team’s star, Jeremy Lin, finished the game with 11 points and six steals, one of which resulted in a highlight-worthy breakaway dunk.  The true star of this game, however, was Keith Wright, who finished with 22 points, three blocks, and six rebounds.  Freshman Kyle Casey was impressive, off the bench, with four blocks and an alley-oop on a pass from guard Oliver McNally. March Madness for Harvard?

Posted by on January 19, 2010 at 10:09 am

There is no denying that the Harvard men’s basketball team has had an incredible year. In fact, it currently has the best start in school history. That is a really long time folks. This school was founded in 1636. Someone can do the math on that. With a current overall record of 12-3, with respectable losses to national basketball powerhouses like UConn (only a seven point deficit) and huge upset wins against Boston College and Seattle, it looks like the Crimson may well be on its way to March Madness. Many media outlets have been abuzz over the incredible performance of senior Jeremy Lin, and predict a possible future in the NBA. With the remaining games left to the Ivy League, the only potential threat is Cornell–who has also had a great year with an overall record of 12-3 as well. Check out the team’s schedule here and make sure to attend the Princeton-Penn weekend February 5-6 in Lavietes Pavilion to cheer on the team. Body paint and loudness recommended.

Bring Out the Broomsticks: Harvard Quidditch Has Arrived!

Posted by on October 6, 2009 at 11:35 am

How much of a Harry Potter fan are you? Think you have what it takes to be a Quidditch hero? We have Annenberg resembling the Hogwarts Dining Hall, why don’t we have a Quidditch Pitch to go with it? Good news. Muggle Quidditch has come to Harvard.

Quidditch is the fastest growing college sport in world, and Stacy Rush, a visiting undergraduate student from Toronto, is doing her part to continue its growth at Harvard. Founded in 2005 by a Middlebury student, Muggle Quidditch, as it has been dubbed, made a breakthrough with last year’s fifteen-school tournament. Colleges such as Middllebury and Vassar, who faced each other for last year’s Quidditch crown, already have competitive teams that have been featured on the evening news and in international magazines for their adaptation of the sport originally conceived by J.K. Rowling in her Harry Potter books. Yes – like the Hogwarts version, it is played on broomsticks, though regrettably the technology is not quite up to par with magic, and these brooms do not fly. While it may seem that without the element of flight, Quidditch loses its immediate appeal, the founders of the sport have worked to keep it as close as possible to the magical version—there is even a student whose sole post during the game is to run around and act like the snitch—the golden ball that must be captured by the seeker to win the game. Other than the seeker role made infamous by Harry Potter himself, other players are responsible for the making up the field positions of beater, chaser, and keeper, and the rules are similar to the regulations laid out in the popular series of books—only without magic, everyone must play into a bit of adolescent make-believe.

This year’s Quidditch World Cup will be held at Middlebury College on October 25. If you think that you have what it takes to be a keeper or seeker, the first ever meeting of the Harvard College Quidditch team is this Thursday, 8:30-9:30 at Harvard Hillel, Rabb Hall.
