This Made Us LOL: Rejected Commercial for Harvard University

Posted by on November 12, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Or not.

Produced by a group called Back of the Class. And yeah. We don’t really know much about this “LA-based group of comedy writer/director/performers”, but since DerrickComedy isn’t making videos about us we’ll settle for this. Also: the dudes are all Tufts grads. Hmmm.

Stereotypes of the Week: Those People You Hate at the Library

Posted by on October 29, 2009 at 1:40 am

42-20079646

Yes, we can: Barack advocates for better library etiquette.

Loud roommates and claustrophobic Dunster walk-through coffins usually drive people to settle for a long night at Lamont instead. But certain peers, like those who play Miley Cyrus at full volume through their earbuds, can sometimes make us wish we hadn’t trekked all the way to the yard in the first place. Noice sympathizes with those who can’t even find sanctuary at the library. Beware of some of these types of people who may transform what should be a studious environment an experience from hell.

The Widener Walker. Some like to take a break from reading room by browsing the books, but beware of these leisurely strollers. It’s not unusual to see a random person hovering in between the expansive stacks. What’s weird is when they inadvertently end up playing hide and seek with you as you look for that elusive copy of a circa-1960s porn manual for your Lit & Sex paper. Peek-a-boo at its creepiest.
The Cabot Concentrator. Those isolated study rooms in Harvard’s dingiest library look like prison cells for a reason. Aesthetic appeal doesn’t even make the list–people come here to get some serious shit done. Those coffee stains crusted over on virtually every desk would shock us, if not for the fact that there’s probably a guy right now sprawled over his problem set, drooling. Noice advises bringing your own Clorox wipes to get rid of all the mystery bodily fluids.
The Lamont Lurker. Please extrapolate those assumptions you’ve held all along–that kid never ever EVER leaves. Ever. An anonymous source who works a late night shift at access services confirms the fact that these Lamonters will leave their stuff on the table at around 5 in the morning to head back to their house for a quick shower, and promptly plop back at their third floor desk to stick their noses back in the books at around 7am. This urban legend appears more than likely, given…

Today’s public service announcement continues after the jump.

In Da Club: Harvard Aviation

Posted by on October 24, 2009 at 1:26 pm

myscansclubWelcome to In Da Club, where Noice parties like it’s your birthday and spotlights one of Harvard’s more obscure student groups on the way. This week’s lucky organization is the Harvard Aviation Club.

The website gives us a detailed look at the club’s storied past - founded in 1909, the Harvard Aviation Club has zipped through the decades in various incarnations until its most recent one in 2007, under the visionary leadership of President Emanuel “The Flight Manual” Beica and VP Richard “Extreme Jet Thrust” Kwant. (We kid you not.) While membership may not come with monthly drinks and a snazzy e-mail address or a Canada pride T-shirt like other similarly named clubs, Harvard Aviation Club will provide you with the resources you need to learn to fly and become a licensed pilot…assuming you have $7000-$8000 lying around and time to study the 700 questions that could be on the FAA Written Exam…

If you’re slightly less hardcore, you may want to keep an eye out for Aviation Club events. Unfortunately, the website doesn’t list any upcoming ones, but the promise lingers in the air – a particularly awesome event in 2007 took students on rides through the Boston skyline in a bright yellow helicopter. (Keep us posted, Webmaster “The Extremely Speedy Dart”!)

But there is a silver lining – chances to procrastinate! (Because we need more.) The Links section of the Aviation Club’s website takes us to Flightlevel350.com, which boasts page after page of aviation videos, ranging from snooze-inducing to downright crazy.  The most popular video of the last 30 days is the thrilling “Virgin 744 Makes a very elegant arrival at London Gatwick on a sunny morning” – check out the Extreme Situations section for more rousing time-wasters.

Parading Around in Feathers and Glitter: An Atypical Sunday Morning

Parading through Cambridge!

Like most students here at Harvard, I find myself rationalizing my procrastination. But this morning has allowed me to resort to a novel excuse. “Sorry Professor, there was a parade outside of my window.”

A part of the Honk! and Harvard Square Oktoberfest celebrations, the eclectic Honk! Parade worked its way along Mass Ave to the cheers of enthusiastic crowds. As advertised on its website, the event featured activist street performers as well as other organizations with the intention:

“…to create a spectacular processional theater piece with striking visual images and plenty of brass band music in order to show by example how our streets and public spaces can function as places for community celebration and fun, as well as for their everyday practical purposes…”

The parade kicked off from Davis Square and hit Harvard Square just as I opened up my Expos reading (read: around 1:00 pm). Considering how Straus is a habitable sound barrier for the rest of the Yard, I decided to grab my camera and hit the streets. Keep reading to learn about today’s events along with a video.

Top Ten: HarvardFML

Posted by on October 6, 2009 at 11:32 am

It’s one o’clock on Tuesday morning, and as my roommates and I give into procrastination, HarvardFML gets another hit. As they read each one out loud, I realize I am sitting here saying the words along with them even though the page is not open in my Firefox browser. It is then that I realize that I have visited the site so many times that I have memorized them. Every single FML that has been posted has been ingrained into my memory instead of the twenty amino acids I should be memorizing for Life Sci. Now that is a reason to say it. FML.

In the spirit of tonight’s late night realization, and in honor of the two-week anniversary of HarvardFML’s official launch, Noice presents, in no particular order, its top ten FMLs—these are the ones to commit to memory. After the jump!
