CS50 Shout-Outs (Literally)

Posted by on October 3, 2011 at 3:18 pm

For the 90% of you undergrads that weren’t present in Sanders Theater for CS50 today: you missed quite a lecture. Well to be fair, even those in attendance probably missed most of what was going on due to a number of outbursts in the orchestra section.

A rather scruffy looking individual sitting in the lower section (pictured above), shouted intermittently at Professor David Malan over the course of the 1.5-hour lecture.

Most noteworthy among his loudly spoken outbursts were things that made us blush and giggle uncomfortably. Phrases like: “C**k!“, “WTF?“,  and “This is crap, this is total crap!“ At around the middle of the lecture about pointers and RAM, he even shouted, “ZUCKERBERG!”

Within an hour, this man’s seating row was completely vacated of students, leaving him more or less free to lay across the bench, make unnerved faces, and make wild, rhythmic hand gestures (what was described by one individual as “a crazy swap dance”). David Malan to his credit, handled the situation rather equanimously, even entertaining the man’s inquiry as to why he kept using the phrase “sanity check.” During a break in the lecture, Malan came down from the stage  to speak to the disruptive individual. And that was pretty much that.

We won’t speculate as to who or what this man was about, but we can say this: he sure as heck wasn’t taking any notes.

If you wanna see how it all went down, listen carefully for the expletive exclamations on the Week 5, Monday video at cs50.net.

Economist Steven Levitt to Speak Today at 4 p.m.

Posted by on March 22, 2010 at 2:43 pm

The famed author of Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, Steven Levitt, visits Harvard today from the University of Chicago.  His visit is a part of the Dean’s Lecture Series at the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study.  His lecture, entitled “Freakonomics and Beyond,”  will discuss his most recent research.  Levitt is best known for presenting intriguing and controversial evidence-based microeconomic ideas such as his study that connected the legalization of abortion with decreases in crime.

The lecture is free and open to all.  It will be held at 4 p.m. in the Radcliffe Gymnasium in Radcliffe Yard located at 10 Garden St.

Oops, We’re Creepy Again…

Posted by on March 7, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Does Harvard seriously need yet another creepy website? Don’t we foster enough stalking behavior with Isawyouharvard!? Do we really need to “pass notes” now too?! Last time I checked, this was Harvard, not the second grade.

The newest site to hit the big Crimson is Harvard Note Pass. It is an exclusive chat service for Harvard students. You log on and then it enables you to chat with others in your large lecture class.

One: aren’t you supposed to be paying attention?! And two: if that really cute boy wanted to talk to you, you’d have his number or at least be facebook friends—don’t be creepy and start up a convo in the middle of Ec10!

So what do we think? Yay or Nay?
