RelationshipsFML: Kiss her already, Dumbass

Posted by on September 26, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Hi all! You may know me as a prolific commenter on HarvardFML; this is my new and improved means of doling out relationship advice. Got a question you want to ask, or a situation you want thoughts and advice on? Email me at somedude.harvardfml@gmail.com, and watch this space for my answer! I’m reposting HarvardFML submissions that I’ve commented on in the past and elaborating on my original comments until you’ve had the chance to ask me new questions.

I’ve been on a few dates with an awesome girl, and I really want to kiss her but I don’t really see the signs and don’t know if it’s because she’s losing interest or is just very shy. Or if I’m bad at picking up cues. FML

Here’s an excellent technique I learned of a few years ago that has never yet failed me: in a romantic setting, if you want to kiss her but you’re afraid it’ll be unwelcome, play with her hair! Just brush the ends gently. If she lets you play with her hair, she’ll let you kiss her.

If you’re not moving forward, you’ve moving backward. Nothing kills attraction more than boredom. If you’ve been on several dates and haven’t kissed, your window might already be closing fast. I understand the nervousness; I’ve been there! Even if all the signs say go for it, you’re afraid that you’re misreading them, so you wait for perfect clarity. Well, as I’ve had to tell myself at various times: “Stop waiting for the perfect moment and just kiss her already, dumbass!”

Special thanks to Alisha Ramos, Ingrid Pierre, NAH13, and viewers like you. Adjacent to this complete breakfast. Email Some Dude at somedude.harvardfml@gmail.com.

Final Club Shenanijinks: Blindfolded Conga Dancing

Posted by on September 26, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Please excuse the "quality", if that word can be used, of this image (it was taken on a phone so old it still says Cingular on the outside).

The photo above, we assure you, is a large group of blindfolded final club punchees being led about outside of Leverett dining hall around the wee brainbreak hours. They were hands-to-hip adorable. Speculators have speculatively informed us that this rump-shakingly elitist conga line would be the would-be Phoenix lads.

While certainly rather kinky, we do wish we had a better photo to start the punch season with. If you have any Final Club Shenanijinks this punch season please email them to: thehvoicemail@gmail.com

Love,
The Voice

Protest and the “Party for Marty”

Posted by on September 26, 2010 at 7:17 pm

I don’t know about you, but “controversy” is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Social Studies, even considering the hundreds of pages demanded by the tutorial (I HATE/LOVE YOU, SS10a!) . Yet, of recent it is: Martin Peretz’s recent blog post in the New Republic has triggered mixed responses from students, faculty, and non-affiliated individuals. Peretz, editor-in-chief of the New Republic and former Harvard professor, is not a stranger to many of the loudest criticisms: accusers reference a number of questionable statements that concern Muslims, Arabs, Palestinians, Latinos, and African-Americans. While an apology on Yom Kippur was meant to stymie accusations of bigotry, the Social Studies department’s decision to keep Peretz’s name on the $650,000 scholarship that he gave to the university has still been met with some backlash.

The result? “The Party for Marty,” where more than 100 protestors against Peretz (and some against the Social Studies department and the university itself) gathered with picket signs and a rallying call of “Harvard Harvard shame on you, for honoring a racist fool” and “Harvard University will not stand for bigotry.” Peretz had been present at the celebration for the Social Studies department’s 50th anniversary, but was followed by this “party” for the majority of his travel to the various events around campus. Combine this with walk-outs, comments from Harvard staff throughout daily panels, and this open letter signed by over 600 people (mostly Harvard affiliates or alumni), and you realize that Marty may have had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day.

Tao Lin Reading at Harvard Book Store

Posted by on September 24, 2010 at 2:13 pm

On Thursday evening (September 23), Tao Lin, author, poet, and notorious blogger, gave a reading from his new novel Richard Yates. Does the book have anything to do with Richard Yates? No. Does Tao Lin care? Absolutely not. In the Q&A session Lin revealed numerous other potential titles, one of which was FREEDOM (with 19 exclamation points). Lin’s most recent novella Shoplifting from American Apparel received high praise and he has also authored a number of poetry collections as well as the novel Eeeee Eee Eeee.

Many in the audience, if unaware of Lin’s personae, likely found the reading rather unconventional–which by many standards it was. However, Lin’s soft-spoken, monotone style has a certain, indelible appeal. He read hilarious fragments from the book without cracking a smile, the principal characters names are Haley Joel Osment and Dakota Fanning, and one of his tattoos simply reads “Fuck America.” Lin gave a signing at the end, and drew something in my personal copy of Richard Yates that only Lin could possibly explain. Overall, it was a fun event and an exciting stray from the conventional reading/Q&A norm.
