Diary of a Holiday Traveller

Posted by Bonnie Cao on November 26, 2009 at 5:15 am

No really, I made you one - check the seats next time youre waiting at Logans Gate 30We all love holidays, we all love home, and we all love pecan pie. Highly probable generalizations aside, yet another to be added to the list is that we all hate waiting. As someone who will actively trade Space Mountain for the Alice in Wonderland teacups at Disneyland because of said hatred, I must thus turn to the only website that can alleviate this frustration – no, not Perez, as much as I love his coke-dripping and groin-heart-ing scribbles – but VeryNoice. So begins the Diary of a Holiday Traveller – oh, and all the things I’m thankful for.

3:37 pm: Dear Mom, I know you like to be prepared and arrive three hours before international flights … and domestic flights, and I wholeheartedly believed you and completely agreed about your fear of the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush. Which is why I listened and bought a 3 pm HSA Shuttle ticket for my 7:30 pm Logan flight -you know, just to be on the safe side. Well .. the shuttle took a whole 27 minutes, check-in took a whole 2 seconds (checked-in early, carry-on luggage only – wootwoot), security took 10 minutes – 3 not counting the wild-eyed cat lady in front of me who thought “taking off your shoes” meant opening your luggage and taking out every single pair of Reef and Old Navy flipflops in your suitcase – which leaves me with …. 3 HOURS and 53 MINUTES to kill. Danke.

3:40 pm: Decide to buy a Chai Tea Latte at Starbucks. It just looked so warmly lit and homey, and I’m a sucker for those red holiday cups – it’s like Christmas joy … in a cup. A pilot hands me a cup sleeve when I get my drink with a wink reminiscent of all things 80s and gag-worthy, and informs me that it’s his “early Christmas present to me.” Thanks dude.

3:48 pm: Thanks to AIrwaves – “the official sound of Boston Logan Airport,” I have learned that GOD (aka Google) has given the ultimate holiday gift to travelling college students with overly-prepared parents everywhere – FREE WIFI! None of this $7.50-for-the-day-when-you’re-really-only-spending-an-hour-(or 3 hours and 53 minutes)-in-the-airport-anyway shiet! YES! FREE! THANK YOU GOOGLE. Oh, and Airwaves I guess you get a thank you too. Read the rest of this entry »

Harvard Haiku: No Pilgrims Here, Just Some Foreign Kids

Posted by Ingrid Pierre on November 24, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Give thanks this year for brevity! Noice wishes you happy travels (or non-travels) this Thanksgiving  with its fourth installment of Harvard Haiku. This time with 36% more tryptophan!

International:
It means I will be alone
All friggin’ weekend.

Airport arrivals,
My mom will probably say,
“Harvard made you fat.”

Four days with the fam,
No clam chowder on Friday.
How will I survive?

Black Friday, it’s on.
If only Neiman Marcus
Would take Crimson Cash.

Music Venue Grade Report: Club Passim

Club Passim is located underground at 47 Palmer St.

If you’re taking “Sound, Noise, and Music” as your Expos class you have learned a little bit about Club Passim and the important role it has played in the history of American music.  If not, you may not be aware that one of folk’s most legendary venues is less than 200 yards from the Yard.  The club, opened in 1958, was first known as Club 47 and was located at 47 Mt. Auburn St. (currently Daedalus Restaurant).  It moved to its current location at 47 Palmer St. in 1963 and eventually changed its name to Club Passim.

In the 1960s, the venue was a starting point for many folk stars including Joan Baez who began playing the club as an unknown seventeen year-old singer.  She also convinced relatively unknown Bob Dylan to play shows at the club.  Dylan played songs between others’ sets, but never had his own headlining show.  Others who played at Club Passim, many of whom had their starts at club, include Muddy Waters, Tom Rush, Jackie Washington, Peter Wolf, Taj Mahal, Patty Larkin, Geoff & Maria Muldaur, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith, and Judy Collins (though not Bruce Springsteen who was refused the opportunity to play at Club Passim).

Though the club rarely attracts artists of that level today, it still offers an opportunity to see some of folk’s greatest acts in an intimate environment.  When we say intimate, we mean intimate.  The club is a mere 30 feet by 40 feet and seats only 125 concertgoers.  Good luck finagling yourself into your chair.  You’ll be getting to know your neighbors very well, especially if you choose dining seating. Californian Ginger Hipster Records With Brazilian Dance Band

Brett Dennen with Forro in the Dark

Brett Dennen with Forro in the Dark

A friend at a music festival, hearing Brett Dennen for the first time, remarked that he was “the hipsters’ answer to the bros’ Jack Johnson”.  Indeed, the analogy between the two singer-songwriters makes sense.  Dennen, like Johnson, is easy to listen to and hard to not like.  Both sing light, guitar-focused songs in major keys, but achieve depth through their biting, soulful lyrics addressing issues of people, poverty, and society.

Dennen’s 2004 album, So Much More, was his first breakthrough on the music scene, reaching Number One on eMusic, but Dennen truly burst on the scene in 2008.  He played at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Austin City Limits, and the Newport Folk Festival and toured with O.A.R. and then with Jason Mraz.  His album, Hope for the Hopeless, achieved mainstream success, especially the single “Make You Crazy,” which was recorded with Nigerian star Femi Kuti and featured Mandy Moore in the music video.  Recently, he re-released one of the songs from Hope for the Hopeless, “Heaven,” as a duet with Natalie Merchant.

Now, Dennen has continued exploring the possibilities of “world music” begun with his collaboration with Femi Kuti by recording an iTunes live session with the Brazilian band, Forro in the Dark.  Forro in the Dark has previously worked with David Byrne, the Brazilian Girls, and Thom Yorke. Hey, Want a Free *COUGH*religiouspropaganda*COUGH* Book?

Posted by Ingrid Pierre on November 19, 2009 at 8:51 pm

The only thing redeeming about this is that new book smell.

The only thing redeeming about this is that new book smell.

What. The. Heck. Is. This?

Here on Noice, we love free things. We love them so much we devote an entire tag to it. We love them so much that we bring you copies of The Voice for free every month. Heck, we’ll even give you two copies if you like! HOWEVER, we do not like to get free crap if it’s actually just crap. This blogger’ll take a free slap in the face over what she and many others received yesterday coming into the yard.

Man, they really had us fooled! We saw some man peddling The Origin of Species 150th Anniversary Edition and grabbed it thinking “Hey! One less thing I’ll have to buy for my Science core!” But alas, a few hours later in the comfortable Snuggie™-fied glory of a common room we discovered… aghast! “THIS ISN’T WHAT WE THOUGHT IT WAS! TROJANS, THIS IS A HOLLOW HORSE! ”

Complete with a “special introduction” by some d-bag named Ray Comfort, this version of the out-of-copyright 19th century classic includes gems like:

After much research, I do concede that you won’t find anything in Darwin’s writings that would indicate that he in any way felt blacks were to be treated as inferior or that his views of them were do to their skin color. He just thought that they were closer to gorillas than whites (33).
